Calling all Young Carers – make your voices heard…

Loud speaker

We are working with Herts 1125 to produce a specific section of the Hertfordshire Young Peoples Manifesto about Young Carers. The top two priorities for young carers are:

1. Supporting Young Carers in School: How this can be done considerately, the need for young carers to access support and information in schools.

To have your say, complete the survey here:

2. Local Young Carer support groups: What is the need for local support groups, what are the benefits to young carers and what would they like available.

Young Carers Conference – 2015

Fantasticats – The Impact

On Friday 20th February our Young Carers Conference, organised by the Young Carers Council, took place at Gosling Sports Centre. The conference was a huge success attended by approx 40 young carers and 70 professionals.

The theme was Fantasticats. The young carers all made a Fantasticat – a sock   puppet with a personality based on all the positives about themselves. The young carers introduced their Fantasticats to professionals including Commissioners, Herts County Council staff, Clinical Commissioning Groups, GP surgeries, schools and voluntary organisations. Through their Fantasticats young carers talked about how much they love being with the person they care for, how they have overcome bullying and prejudice and their exciting plans for the future. We had budding scientists and surgeons amongst us.  Professionals’ feedback said how inspirational the young carers were.

A sketch from the young carers showed us how upset they become when bullied and ignored.

The commissioners left the conference in no doubt of the future envisioned by young carers. This included having their voices heard, support and counselling, more understanding about young carers in the wider community and meeting other young carers for support and activities.

All in all – a resounding success

Opportunity for Young Carers to be involved in a research project

YC survey poster

(Click on poster to enlarge view)

Are you a young carer aged 13-18, offering unpaid care or support to a family member?

You are invited to take part in an online questionnaire about risk behaviour, including smoking, drugs, exercise, sex and food. Sometimes, teenagers experiment with risk-taking. Your answers will help to improve understanding of risk behaviour in young carers. Visit for more information.

(Please note, this is not a Carers in Hertfordshire project and all questions or comments should be sent to the researcher via the contact details on the website)

These are the results of one of our Young Carers workshops recently where they were shown and taught how to make their own bags. All the carers had a great time and we are sure you will agree the bags look great! Well done to all the Young Carers for their efforts.
