In half term our Young Carers Conference, organised by the Young Carers Council, took place at Watford Football Club. We called the conference YCFC, and it was a busy and successful day with 50 young carers and over 40 professionals.
The conference was focused on priorities for young carers in Hertfordshire for 2016, and included the issues that matter most to young carers. These included:
- Early identification of being a young carer
- The impact caring has on emotional and physical wellbeing
- Better support in school and with transitions
- Being listened to and included in decisions about care
- The effect caring has on family finances
Young carers were able to share their stories with the professionals and with each other. Professionals feedback said how much they liked hearing from young carers, and that they now have a better understanding of the challenges faced.
We also welcomed Freefall Productions who performed 3 scenes based on a young carer’s life.
In the afternoon young carers were able to meet three Watford Football Club players. They asked lots of great questions, like whether they were ever told they wouldn’t be able to succeed and what they loved most about the game. The day ended on a high with a tour of the stadium.
