Carers Week 2017
Carers Week: 2017
A huge thank you to 3 members of our Young Carers Council who got involved in Carers Week 2017.
Carers Week is a national campaign to celebrate, recognise and raise awareness of Carers of all ages throughout the UK.
The theme of this year’s Carers Week is ‘Building Carer Friendly Communities’ and Annie, Rachel and Rockee did exactly that by hosting an assembly at their school in Watford: Westfield Academy. Representatives from every Form in Westfield attended the assembly, and learnt about:
What is meant by ‘Young Carer’?
What do young carers do?
What impact does caring have on young carers’ lives?
The positives of being a young carer
The challenges faced by some young carers
Westfield Academy pupils asked lots of brilliant questions, including ‘how do you know someone is a young carer?’ ‘do you ever resent the responsibility?’.
They identified some positives
“you feel good about yourself”
“it gives you confidence”
They also came up with some fantastic ideas on how schools could be more carer-friendly:
- Have a chill out area/time for young carers
- Having a display board for young carers
- Talking about it in PSHE
- Whole school assemblies
Well done Annie, Rockee and Rachel and thank you to all at Westfield Academy for helping to build carer-friendly school communities!
